Sarah Ball was born in Rotherham in 1965 and studied illustration at Newport Art College. She spent several years working as an illustrator and was much in demand, popular with clients such as the Royal National Theatre. She moved to Monmouthshire in 1996. Her work concerns the visual language of the storyteller, as she explains;
“My work is that of the gatherer; a curator of objects and ideas. My paintings allude to fable and allegory - sourced from museum curios, Victorian taxidermy, studio and police photography, anthologies and collections from the natural world as well as objects gathered from my immediate surroundings - the sources are re-cast, creating new characters in imagined scenarios".
Since completing her MFA at Bath Spa University in 2005, Sarah has exhibited widely and has been shortlisted for several awards, including University of Glamorgan Purchase Prize in 2006 and 2008, and the Threadneedle Prize, London in 2009. In 2013 she was the overall winner of 'Welsh Artist of the Year'.
